Sarah Louise Martin

Sarah Louise Martin, age 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 12, 2016 at Racine Commons Assisted Living Center. Sarah was born to the late William and Laura (Desrochers) Murphy, on November 21, 1922 in Pontiac, Michigan. After her mother’s early death, she was adopted by her Aunt and Uncle, the late Henry and Agnes (Murphy) Matthews. Sarah was united in marriage to the late Frank Martin on June 21, 1941 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. They were happily married for over 62 years. Sarah was a loving mother to five children. She was involved with the Brownies, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts for her children, as again with the Brownies for her granddaughter, Debra. After raising her own 5 children, Sarah spent several years involved in day care for her granddaughter, Debra, and her friend. Stephanie. Sarah and Frank enjoyed many wonderful times traveling with their close friends the Gedemers and Newmans. They also enjoyed golfing, square dancing and playing cards and games with their many friends and relatives. They both had a special place in their hearts for their cats and especially the last one, Samantha (Sammy), who lived with Sarah for many years at Racine Commons. Her other interests included, sewing, crafting, and working puzzles. She also enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking and baking. But most importantly, she enjoyed spending time with her children and extended family. In later years, she thoroughly enjoyed monthly luncheons and activities with the Belle City Red Hat Flappers. Sarah is survived by her brother, Raymond (Dorothy) Murphy of Waukegan, Illinois. She is also survived by three sons: James (Judy) Martin, Frank (Kathy) Martin and John Martin; two daughters: Jane (Bill (deceased) Acklam, living in Utah and Nancy (Tim) Quigley, living in Missouri as well as 12 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and other relatives. Sarah was preceded in death by her parents and adoptive parents; 2 brothers: Lawrence and Edward Murphy and her sister Edith (Paul) Rapp. A Memorial Service will be held at Wilson Funeral Home on Monday, September 19, 2016 at 12:00 PM. Relatives and friends may meet with the family from 11:00 until the time of service. Memorials to the Wisconsin Humane Services – Racine campus, Hope Safehouse or the Alzheimer’s Foundation have been suggested by the family. The family wishes to thank all the staff at both Racine Commons Assisted Living Center facilities for 11 years of continuous compassionate care and understanding. A special thanks to Season’s Hospice Care and Family Care staffs for meeting Sarah’s special needs in recent years and for providing family support. The family has truly appreciated Dr. Elizabeth Yun’s gentle wisdom and guidance.
