James Gerald Hughes, age 55, passed away on January 29, 2026, at Ascension–All Saints Hospital, leaving behind a deep and heartfelt sense of loss. James was a loving husband, a devoted family man, and a loyal friend whose presence brought comfort, humor, and authenticity to those who knew him best. Born on July 11, 1970, in Chicago, Illinois, James was the son of David Byron and Sharon Lucille (née Clark) Hughes. He was raised in the Christian faith, which remained a quiet but steady influence throughout his life and guided the way he loved and cared for others. Nineteen years ago, James met the love of his life, Lauren Elizabeth Penar. Their connection was immediate and enduring, leading to their marriage on August 8, 2010, at Faith United Methodist Church in Genoa, Illinois. Together, they shared 15 years of marriage built on love, laughter, and an unbreakable bond. Lauren was James’s heart and home, and he cherished every moment they spent side by side. James found joy in the things that made life feel familiar and meaningful to him. He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and had an unmistakable love for music, especially heavy metal, while also enjoying artists like Toby Keith, Frank Sinatra, AC/DC, and his favorite, Rob Zombie. He could often be found unwinding with his favorite shows — NCIS, Chicago P.D., and WWE Wrestling — or admiring his carefully collected metal model cars and trucks, which he took great pride in. More than anything, James loved his family. He valued time spent together, shared laughter, and simple moments that became lasting memories. He also shared an incredibly special bond with his grandmother, whose relationship meant the world to him. James was deeply devoted to his beloved dog, his Chihuahua mix, Midnight Rose, who was a constant companion and brought him endless comfort and joy. James will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Lauren Hughes; his three sons, twins—James and Nicholas Hughes, and Kyle Hughes; his beloved daughter and constant companion, his dog, Midnight “Monster”; his sisters, Colleen Hughes and Darlene Hughes; his parents-in-law, Kathy (Dennis) Schnell and John Penar; his special friends, Nathan and Samantha; and his many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. James was welcomed home by those who passed before him, including his parents, David and Sharon Hughes; his brother, Brian Hughes; his maternal grandparents, Edward and Lois Giberson; and his paternal grandparents, William and Helen Clark. A celebration of James’ life will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at the Wilson Funeral Home. Visitation will take place from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., with an open microphone for shared remembrances and eulogies beginning at 3:00 p.m. James will be remembered for his kind heart, his passions, and the deep love he had for those closest to him. Though his time with us was far too short, the impact he made will remain forever in the hearts of all who loved him. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered prayers, love, and support during this difficult time and asks that James be remembered for the love he gave and the memories he shared.
